Ben Tallon's, weekly, illustration podcast, Arrest All Mimics, is an invaluable source of insider information, anecdotes and inspiration. No more so than in these two special editions that feature Olivier Kugler. Whilst I wish to learn from Olivier in terms of his process, I am at pains that my work should not mimic his. In listening to these, it is the idea of reporting, sourcing a particular thread of narrative to deliver to an audience, that struck me as the thing which I fail to consider with the required focus; delivering instead, some good drawings and asking an audience to make of them what they will. Olivier - and other reportage artists - have a clear understanding of what it is they are saying and so they create the illustration to do so. |
