Waiting is a sketchbook based research project that observes the act of waiting in a hospital waiting area (Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle). Over the course of many days, I observed and drew patients, staff, and visitors in the act of waiting. Sketched clandestinely, in small pocket sketchbooks, with discretion as a primary concern, the resulting artworks recognise and reflect vulnerability, strength and pathos. The collected artwork, ranging from original sketchbooks, to digitally augmented editions and a handmade compendium, were exhibited at The University of Cumbria in 2018. |
Drawn over the course of a week, 'Waiting' is a collection of observational drawings depicting people in the waiting area of The Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.
Created on site, in pocket sketchbooks with a fountain pen, the drawings capture humanity in moments of boredom, concealed anxiety and absent minded distraction. 'Waiting' was created with support from Healing Arts- an organisation that endeavours to bring art to the patients of Carlisle's Cumberland Infirmary. August 2018 |
